Chapter 2

“Well hello, Sam. I heard that you had some information for me.” An evil bellow said, his voice low and cunning. “I heard I’d find it useful in findin’ a special girl I used to know. You better tell me what ya know, I could put you through a lot a pain.” The man made his threat to the small, old, and scared hotel manager.

“I have a young couple that just checked into one of my rooms and one of your men said that you would want to hear about the young woman.” The man stuttered. “And well, I have to tell you because you know.” The old man said with a look of fear in his eyes.

“Yes, you better tell me. I own this fine facility it could use some fixing up, you know. It’s not to my liking. The drab carpeting, these flowers. I would make a lot of changes, maybe some workin’ women, they really bring business in.” The man said with a sly smirk on his face. “Now you had something to tell me about a young woman.”

The hotel manager, along with all other business owners in St. Joseph were scared and overwhelmed with this man. Not only did he own all of the businesses but it seemed that he owned all of the people. He was a deceitful man, unkind, and without a care for anyone but himself. “Mr. Wicks her name is Louise McCloud, she just checked in today with a young man.”

Wicks was cough off guard with the mention of that name. He pondered it evilly for a moment. “Louise McCloud, huh, Little Louise.” he said out loud. “Last time I heard about her she was working for the Pony Express as a boy, hiding from me. She thought she was doin’ a good job too.” Wicks added with a laugh. “Now tell me about this man she came with and what has she been doin’?”

“Well,” the man stuttered again. He was not sure what kind of connection Wicks had with the woman but he was sure that is wasn’t good. Simon Wicks was just not a good person and when he wanted to hurt someone he did. “The man is tall, looks less than twenty, and is very handsome. They checked in about an hour ago.”

Wicks was thrilled with the news of Louise being in town. This is going to be so much fun. He said to himself. I get every girl that brakes a contract with me. He added mentally to build his confidence. “Did she do anything else?” he asked the manager.

“She was sick when they got here, so the boy took her to the doctor before they checked in.” The small man didn’t want to tell Wicks what the man told him of the girl’s condition, he knew Wicks had it in for this girl, he could see it in his eyes. “She was at the doctors and when they came to get a room......” The hotel manager didn’t want to go on but the more he looked into the eyes of the cold, dark man he knew he had to. “Wicks what do you want with her?” he asked to stall the man from knowing the what was made the young woman sick.

“Right now!” Wicks said to the old man. “Tell me what happened when they came to check in!” Wicks was interested in everything he could use to hurt Louise and he was going to hurt her. “Tell me what happened at the doctor’s office. Tell me!” Wicks was getting irritated by the man. “Workin’ women,” he said. “they sure would help this place and maybe after you run out of money I’ll lend you some so you can have a good time with one of them.”

“They came into the hotel and the man looked so happy, so I asked him what he was so happy about.” Wicks stared coldly at the man, his eyes squinted and listening hard for more things to use to hurt Louise McCloud. “He told me that she was pregnant.”

She’s back! Was all Wicks could think as he lay in bed, knowing that what he had ordered would be done. He was going to make Lou pay, through the roof!
Not only was he going to take away this Kid, the strange name he now knew belonged to Little Lou’s fiancé but he was going to take away her baby. This
is going to hurt her so much, he thought.

Wicks did not have a kind bone in his body, everyone knew that. He was known to get so angry sometimes that he would go find one of his women, rape them,
and just kill them for the fun of it. He would not kill Louise though, she was to valuable, too much in the need to have a chip knocked off her shoulder and Wicks was set on knocking that chip off. He would kill her baby and watch her go through the pain of a miscarriage all by her self, without that man by her side to wipe away her tears and tell her everything was going to be ok and to say that they would have more babies. No. Wicks thought. I want her to be sad
and alone and in pain with me watching.

Kid and Lou sat on the edge of their bed, holding each other. Neither of them said a word, they just sat, each submersed in their own thinking. Kid’s mind was glazed by the happiness and thrill of his and Lou’s baby. Lou’s line of thought was much different. Yes she was happy but she couldn’t concentrate on the happiness of being pregnant, she was in dread.

What are we going to do! she thought. How are we going to make it--I can’t work. We’re not even married! This can’t be happening. Lou didn’t even notice that she had begun to cry during her internal speech until she heard a sob.

Kid was woken from his joy with a cry from his beloved. “Lou baby, what’s wrong? Don’t cry, honey, please. What wrong?” Kid said soothingly to the continually sobbing woman in his arms. Before Kid and the non-attentive Lou even knew what was happened next the door had been pushed open and the
couple had been pulled apart.
