Chapter 1

“Lou, wake up.” Kid said to Lou in the empty bunkhouse as he stood by her bunk and placed his hand on her arm. “We have a big day today.” he whispered
softly as her eyelids fluttered.

Today Kid and Lou we’re going to St. Joe. It would take all day to get there. Once they arrived they would get a room for the night. The next day they would pick up Jeremiah and Teresa and get married. The wedding arrangements had already been made on a previous ride of Kid’s and the plan of picking up Jeremiah and Teresa had been finalized by a letter written by Lou. Both Lou and Kid had managed to select their wedding attire on rides to places were they normally didn’t go and because of that no one would remember them.

Both lovers had mastered sneaking out and hiding how much they really cared about each other. Hiding there feelings had been the hardiest thing they had to do so far. It seemed that everything they needed each other through happened in those weeks. Kid got shot, a person from town found out Lou was a girl but thankfully decided not to tell, and Lou was sick with what Rachel diagnosed as stomach flu but Lou was not sold on that and planed to go to a doctor in St. Joe.

“Come on, Lou.” Kid said when Lou didn’t get up. When she finally opened her eyes Kid said, “Good morning. Are you felling any better?”

Lou was not felling any better and that was proved by the nauseous feeling she was overwhelmed with as she sat up. “No, Kid.” she said as she got out of bed and ran outside, Kid following.

Something is really wrong with her. Kid thought as he ran behind her to the outhouse. When Lou got to her destination she shut the door and left Kid standing outside. Kid heard the sound of what he knew was Lou vomiting. Something is really wrong with her. Kid stated to himself once again. After a few more moments of the offal vomiting sounds he was almost ready to open the door himself when Lou came out. “Lou, are you ok?”

“No.” she sobbed onto Kid’s shoulder. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” Lou was scared about what could be wrong with her. She could have some life
threatening decease that she could give Kid for all she knew. What’s wrong with me? Lou said to herself. What could it be?

“Why don’t you go clean up and have some breakfast, Lou. Food might make you feel better.”

I really don’t think food will help. She voiced to herself and nodded to Kid. “I love you, Kid.” she said after she surveyed the grounds around them to make sure no one was there.

“I love you too, Lou.” Kid replied as he walked into the main bunkhouse were breakfast was being served.

Later that day Kid and Lou were on their way to St. Joe. It was a hot mid August day. The heat only made Lou feel worse than she already did. She was sick, tired, hungry, and she felt like she could just snap any minute. “Kid, could we stop soon?” Lou questioned, in the need of a break.

“Yeah, Lou. Are you ok? We can go back to Sweetwater if you want.” Kid said to Lou. “We can get married when you’re better.”

“No.” Lou said as Kid stopped Katy in a clearing, near a small stream. “I have to go there to find out what’s wrong with me.” she pleaded as she looked into his eyes while he helped her off of her horse by giving her his hand.

“So,” Kid asked as he sat by the stream. “how long do you think we will be able to hide our secret, Lou.”

“It’s not a question if we will, Kid. We will, we have to.”

“Secrets can be painful things.” Kid said. “So what secrets are you keeping from me?” Kid said with a smile.

A lot, Kid. Lou said to herself. “Kid, you know you keep some secrets too. Think about it, your name!” Lou said, tinking quickly to find some way out of talking about her secrets. Lou new that one day she would have to tell Kid about the dark and scary things in her life before the express. Wicks. She said to herself. Oh, secrets are painful, Kid.

“Come on, Lou!” Kid said sarcastically. “It’s just my name. What are you hiding from me?” he said in retaliation. After making his last statement Kid immediately saw a look of fear on Lou’s face. “Lou, what’s wrong?”

There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Kid. Lou voiced to herself. “Kid, we better get going.” Lou said to get off the subject of secrets. “We need to get to St. Joe before dark.” St. Joe. Why am I going there, it holds so much pain.

It was mid evening when Kid and Lou got to St. Joe. Kid new that Lou needed to see a doctor as soon as possible. Not only had she vomited twice on their
trip but she was begining to look very pail and tired. So he planed on taking the horses to the livery and then Lou to the doctor.

When they arrived at the livery Lou found herself feeling sicker than ever. The smell of the livery seemed to be the cause of this bout of queasiness. It had been a long day. Lou was not only sick from her illness but she was also tired and hot. “Kid,” she said as she grasped his arm and her knees gave way.

“Lou!” Kid gasped, kneeling beside the now unconscious Lou. I have to get her to the doctor. Kid thought. Oh, what if something is really wrong? With his mind filled with fear and uncertainty Kid gathered Lou in his arms and ran to the doctor’s office.

Kid entered the office and immediately got the doctor’s attention. “Put her in here.” the doctor said, motioning to a room branching of the small front room. After Lou was on the table in the room the doctor said, “Can you tell me what happened?”

“We were in the livery and she fainted. She’s been sick for some time now. She’s been tired and she’s been vomiting.” The doctor could see that the young man in front of him was very worried about the woman so he decided that he had enough to go on.

“Why don’t you go sit in the waiting room. I’ll be done in no time.” the doctor persuaded Kid.

“Is she going to be ok?” Kid said with a worried look in his eyes. She has to be ok. He uttered to himself. She will be, the doctor will help her.

“She’s going to be just fine. I think I know what’s wrong with her, I just need some time to make sure.” The doctor did have an idea of what was going on inside the young beautie in front of him but to tell this man, who part of him said was her husband, would not be right before he was certen.

“Ok.” Kid said as he left the room after casting one more look at Lou. What he veiwed in that look scared him. She’s so little and pail. What’s happening to her?

It was about twenty minutes later when the doctor came out of the room where Lou was to talk to Kid. “Son,” he said sitting in a chair next to Kid. “she hasn’t woken up yet but I have some news that I think you would like to know.” the old man said as he brushed his hand through his gray hair. “You’re going to be a father!”

“What?” Kid said with a befuddled look on his face. “I’m going to be a father.” he said, answering the question for himself. “How did you know I was the father?”

“Well son, I’ve seen many people in my time. You can tell when two people love each other, even when one is unconscious.” As the doctor finished his sentence both men heard a moan from the room that was occupied by Lou. “Why don’t you go in and tell her the news. She needs to get some rest and take
things easy. Congratulations.”

“Thank you.” Kid said and walked into the room. “Lou, it’s me.” Kid said as he stood by the office table Lou was on. “I have some good news for you.
Well, you fainted so I brought you here, to see the doctor, you’re pregnant Lou! You’re going to have a baby!”

“What?” Lou said as she sat up and was met with the room spinning. “No, you didn’t just say that.” Lou thought outloud. “Did you?”

“You’re pregnant Lou!” Kid said to Lou who still was not completly out of the blur of her peaceful stupor. Kid was aware that Lou was sill in somewhat of a tranclike state so he simpley said, "Let’s go get a room, sweetheart.”

Kid was thrilled about what the doctor discuvered about Lou and his happiness showed on his face, the man at the front desk noticed that and Kid gladly suplied what he was happy about. He had so many things to be happy about and look forward to. Not only was he madly in love with the beautie that he held in his arms as he went up the staircase of the hotel to get to the second floor but they were going to get married and she was caring his child
