Epilogue

It had been about 6 months since Kid had come home when Cody came riding into the station one day at top speed. "Good lord Cody, where’s the fire." Kid shouted.

"Kid, good I found you. I’ve got a letter for you from Beckworth Fall." Cody said handing the letter to Kid.

Lou was sitting on the corral fence watching Buck, Ike and Jimmy break a new horse when Cody had come riding in. She hopped down and walked up next to Kid. "Who’s it from?" she asked.

"It’s from Dr. Adams," Kid said scanning the letter quickly, "Mrs. Beckworth died Saturday."

"Oh Kid!" Lou said putting her hand over her mouth and the tears came to her eyes. "I’m so sorry." She knew that Kid and Mrs. Beckworth had been writing since Kid had come home and that he would even go to see her when he had rides to Beckworth Falls. She knew that Kid had become very close with the older woman and that she was very fond of the Kid.

"The doctor says that she requested that I receive $500 upon her death. She had even put it in her will. He says that she knew she could never make it up to me what had happened and she hoped that this would help with the future." Kid finished reading the letter with a catch in his voice. He had truly enjoyed getting to know the older woman and cared about her more than he have could imagined.

Kid folded the letter up and put it in his pocket. Lou gave him a quick hug and kissed his cheek.

"Well it looks like you’re a pretty wealthy man," Cody joked. "Can I have a loan?"

Lou slapped Cody’s arm. Kid just laughed. He didn’t tell Lou that the doctor had said the Mrs. Beckworth hoped Kid would use the money to get his girl and buy her a nice place to live and start their ranch.

Kid looked at Lou who was holding his hand tightly. "Yep, Mrs. Beckworth I’m sure she’s the one. Someday and someday soon I hope to ask her to marry me again. Who knows maybe this time?"

Kid squeezed Lou’s hand, "Come on lets go tell everyone to get dressed up and we’ll all go to town for dinner."
