Chapter 2
Where Am I, Who Am I
Kid started to move and let out a low moan. "Where am I and what the hell
happened?" He thought to himself. He tried to move but it hurt too much
and he moaned again.
"Your Ok dear. Mama’s here."
Kid heard the soft voice of a woman coming from what seemed a long way away. Who was that speaking? Kid slowly opened his eyes and tried to focus on the room. Kid looked around the semi-dark room trying to figure out where he was. He saw an older woman sitting on a chair near the bed and an older man standing next to her.
"Glad to see your eyes opened," The older man said. "Do you remember what happened or where you are?"
Kid thought for a moment. "No," he finally said shaking his head, "I can’t seem to remember anything. Who am I?" He asked with a shake in his voice.
The doctor laid his had on his arm reassuringly, "Its Ok son. You’re going to be fine. You were shot 3 days ago and hit your head. You home safe now."
"Home?" Kid said looking around. Nothing looked right and nothing felt familiar.
"Yes, dear, your safe here in your room. Don’t you recognize anything? Me?" The older lady asked leaning over the bed.
Kid shook his head no.
"That’s alright dear," The older woman said patting his arm. "It will all come back to you after you rest for a while."
Kid wasn’t sure she was right. He felt like he didn’t belong here. "Can I ask a question? What’s your name? What’s my name?"
The older woman smiled and gently said, "I’m your mother, Charlotte Beckworth and your James Beckworth. Now rest dear and we will talk more later."
The doctor stood back during this exchange and shook his head. He knew the young man in the bed wasn’t James but why Charlotte was telling him he was he didn’t know. Nor did he know who the young man really was.
Kid tried to rest after the woman and doctor left his room but he was confused. The name Beckworth didn’t mean anything to him and he didn’t feel right here but he wasn’t sure why. "It’s just the not knowing," he told himself. "Give it time like the doc said and you’ll remember everything." At least he hoped he would.
