Chapter 10
Breakfast
The next morning Kid was up and dressed by the time Lou came into his room.
They had a wonderful day planned and by the looks of things he was as excited
about it as Lou was.
"Well you’re up early," Lou commented coming into his room.
Kid turned from the window he had been staring out of and smiled at Lou, "I was just looking at the garden and thinking how nice it will be to sit out there and get some fresh air. This old house is nice but for some reason I just don’t feel like the indoor type."
Lou smiled at his comment. She knew Kid was the outdoor type and being inside all this time was probably hard on him. "Well first I think we should get you downstairs for breakfast and then we’ll talk about going outside."
Kid and Lou descended the stairs together. Kid with one hand on the overly polished rail and his other arm around Lou’s waist for support. "If he falls," Lou thought, "I really don’t think I will be able to help much. Lord he’s a heck of a lot heavier than I remembered. Lou laughed to herself.
She must have let a small giggle escape because Kid asked, "What’s so funny?"
Lou smiled and replied, "Oh nothing. I was just thinking that I hope you don’t fall because if you do I’m afraid I won’t be much help."
Kid let out a hearty laugh at her comment then looked at her seriously, "You’re right I think we’d would both be goners."
When they reached the bottom of the staircase Kid stopped and looked around. "Wow, this is some place isn’t it? But you know I don’t have the faintest idea where the dinning room is."
Lou smiled and said, "Right this way sir. I stumbled upon it the other day when I was getting dinner." Lou led him down the beautifully decorated entrance hall and through a pair of massive doors.
The dinning room was furnished like most of the other rooms in the house with dark wood and a large table. The only difference in this room and most of the others were the large windows that look out at the gardens. Even though there were large heavy drapes on these windows also, these drapes were pulled back to let in the morning sun.
"I think I like this room," Kid said.
"Me too," Lou agreed. This room had a warmth about it that the rest of the house was lacking.
Mrs. Beckworth was already seated at the head of the large table when the two walked in.
"Good morning dear," she said in her powerful voice, "Did you sleep well. Come sit down here by me." She said pointing to the chair on her right.
"Good morning," Kid said taking his seat. He then looked at Lou as she continued towards the smaller door at the end of the room; "Won’t you be joining us?"
Before Lou could answer Mrs. Beckworth spoke to Kid, "Dear now I know you don’t remember anything but you should know that servants eat in the kitchen. Ms. McCloud understands that, don’t you dear?"
"Yes mam," Lou replied, "It’s fine Mr. Beckworth just let me know when you’re done."
Kid looked at Lou with a funny expression on his face. He had a feeling that this wasn’t right that Lou should be here but he didn’t want to make his mother angry. "How do I let you know?"
He said with an odd expression on his face.
"Just ring the bell, I’ll hear you." Lou said pointing to the small silver bell next to his plate on the table and continued into the kitchen.
Kid looked at the bell like it was a snake, how could he just ring for his friend that seemed so unfair. It was like calling a puppy. Then he noticed that his mother has a small bell next to her plate also.
"Well if that is all settled lets have breakfast, shall we?" Mrs. Beckworth picked up the bell and rang it. It gave off a small tinkling sound, which Kid might have found pleasant under different circumstances. As soon as she sat the bell down a maid came gliding thought the door with a large tray loaded with food.
"Now dear, I’ve had cook make all your favorites this morning in honor of you making it down to breakfast after so long in bed. So eat up so that you will regain you strength quickly.
"Thank you," Kid mumbled as the maid started loading up his plate.
"I’ve hired a new stable boy," Mrs. Beckworth said, "Dr. Adams recommended him. He’s been working at the livery. I believe he will be her today. Maybe if you feel up to it you will be able to go down there today and check on him."
"Yes, I’d like that," Kid said. "I have a feeling I like horses. Is that true?"
"Why yes dear," Mrs. Beckworth said, "You’ve always liked horses. Maybe you’re getting your memory back."
"I don’t know about that but I do seem to know that I like horses."
Lou had eaten her breakfast quickly in the kitchen so that she would be ready when Kid rang. The cook and maid were both very friendly and Lou enjoyed their company. She figured she was having a better time in the kitchen then Kid was having in that dinning room. Lou had just finished helping Cookie, as the cook like to be called, wash the pots and pans from breakfast, when she heard the ringing of the bell.
Lou pushed opened the door to the dinning room and smiled at Kid as he set the bell down. Mrs.
Beckworth had already left the room. She had told Kid that she had an important meeting that she must attend that day. Lou was happy that she wasn’t there when she entered.
"Sorry about that," Kid said motioning to the bell.
"It’s all right." Lou said, "I understand. It’s just protocol nothing against me." She gave Kid a wide grin and helped him up from the chair. "What would you like to do now?"
"Mrs. Beckworth, err, mother, said we have a new stable boy and that I should go down and check him out. Do you think that would be all right?" He asked.
"Well how are you feeling? Not to tired?"
"No, I feel really good. I think being able to move around is helping more than just laying there in that bed"
"Ok, then, we’ll take a slow walk to the stables and see the new help and the horses." Lou smiled at Kid. He looked so excited about seeing the horses. Just like a small child in a candy shop.
