Civil Happenings
By Sheena

Prologue

Kid awoke in the room he shared with his wife in Rachel’s house. He and Louise had been married for four months now. The express had ended and their family was still tied together in Rock Creek.

Kid noticed something different. So many things were different now. So many good differences.

Cody was home for good from the army. He said he came home because he wasn’t cut out for the army but everyone knew the real reason for him coming home. He had seen too much for his young eyes and soul. He had seen death. Unxplaneable, unjust, different death.

Jimmy and Buck were living in the bunkhouse and worked as Teaspoon’s deputies along Kid and Cody.

Kid and Louise were no longer the newest newly weds because Teaspoon and Rachel has tied the not two week ago.

The difference that Kid felt was not any of those. It was Lou. She laid awake beside ! him under the covers and she looked pale.

“Lou, what’s wrong?”

“I’m sick.”

“What hurts?”

“My stomach. Every time I look at food I feel like throwing up.”

“Are you ok, do you know what’s wrong, how long have you been like this?” Kid was worried and with that came ramblings.

“I’ve been sick for weeks. Kid I...”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Kid, I think I’m pregnant. I didn’t tell you because I’m not sure.”

As if he didn’t hear the last part of her sentence Kid answered her statement by saying, “Lou that’s so great we’re going to have a baby! Well, maybe.”

“Yes, maybe but I have to find out. I’m going to the doctor today.”

“I love you Louise.” Kid stated while kissing his wife of four months. “I better get going, Rachel will have breakfast ready soon.”

“Oh, please don’t talk about food.” Louise said while laughing at her husband.

He’s so happy, she thought.

Kid got dressed and went downstairs.

“What are you so happy about?” A voice from a kitchen chair called.

“Jimmy, I’ll tell you if you promise not to tell Lou I told you.”

“Why do I have to promise?”

“Jimmy,” Kid said irritated because he wanted to share the news of a possible child. “Just promise.”

“Ok, I promise.”

“Lou thinks she’s goin’ to have a baby!”

“Well, congratulations, but doesn’t she have to know?”

“She’s goin’ to see doc today.”

“What are you two talkin’ about?”an old voice called.

“Just something, Teaspoon.” Kid replied with a wide grin on his face.

“You boys best have a seat.” Rachel said as she sat food down on the table. “Kid, where is Louise?”

“I don’t think she’s in the mood for food.”

Rachel smiled and eyed Kid as if she knew the meaning of what he said. “Teaspoon, would you pass the blessing?”

“Why, yes, Mrs. Hunter, I will!”

As Teaspoon finished grace Buck and Cody wandered in and sat in their seats.

As the six family members ate at the table Lou started into the room.

“Kid, I’m goin’ to leave now.” she said putting her hands on his shoulders.

“Ok, Lou. See you latter.”

“I love you Kid.” Louise whispered into her husbands ear while kissing it.

“Love you Lou.” was Kid’s loving reply as she went to the door.
