AS I LAY DYING

She sat perfectly still as I brushed her hair. It was long now; past her knees. She loved the way I brushed her hair. I enjoyed it myself. Spending time with her was all I ever wanted. I thought she looked as beautiful as the day we met. She hardly talked anymore. She just sat there staring out the window as I brushed her hair.

She loved the being in the outdoors; being part of nature. The lines of her face told of years of laughter. She complained about them, but I told her she was beautiful and she ought to remember they were laughter's way of reminding her of happer times. She was tired now, I helped her on the bed. She laid down and closed her eyes. When I woke he were standing there to take her away from me. As she lay dying, I begged him please not to take her. No tears were in her eyes as I watched her raise to her feet . She rose with no pain. she was young again.

She smiled at me and walked into my arms. She touched the tears rolling down my face. She told me she had to go now. I pleaded for her not to go. He took his place beside her and told her it was time. She kissed me goodbye like always. She took her last breath and she was gone. My wife of fifty years was gone. The mother of my children, my lover and my friend was gone. I kissed her forehead and lay down and said goodbye to the world and hello to her and heaven.

They buried us together, all our children, grandchildren, friends and great grandchildren said goodbye to us with tears in their eyes. I will never feel alone . Two graves mark us now.
