Jimmy watched as Emma walked ahead with Priscilla. He longed to go with her. This was his wedding night. He was certain if he could get her alone; they could go back to the place they were at on the farm.
“Can’t this wait until tomorrow?” Jimmy asked impatiently. Why did Sam want to talk to him now of all times?
“No,” Sam snapped. “Listen up. I know you are married, I know Priscilla is expecting. But I want you to sleep on the floor.”
Jimmy stared at him. “Huh?” What was Sam talking about?
“You need a beginning.”
“We had one.” Their beginning had been an adventure. Jimmy frowned. But was a beginning supposed to be a few hours?
“A real one,” Sam told him. “You have to chase a woman. That makes them feel special.”
“Chase?” Jimmy looked at Sam, puzzled. “After we are married.”
“A beginning, remember!”
“Okay, okay.” Jimmy raised his hands in supplication.
“So you tell her you want to wait until she is comfortable with you. That you will sleep on the floor for as long as it takes.”
“But Sam,” Jimmy complained. The floor was hard. How long was he supposed to stay there?
Sam ignored his protests and continued, “Take her out for meals. Not just in restaurants, you gotta watch your money,” Sam said and Jimmy frowned. Money. He had not really thought about that. He had some in the bank as he earned a good wage as an Express rider and rarely had to spend any. But what did he do now?
“Women like picnics. Go for walks, buy her things.”
“I bought her earrings.”
“Buy her other things. Little things. Remember dates, like anniversaries,” Sam continued. He snapped his fingers. “Women go crazy for sunsets. Bring her flowers.”
“Okay,” Jimmy agreed. He really did not understand any of this,
but it sounded good. And Sam was successful in wooing Emma, so he must know
something.
